Weekly Roundup-January 23, 2011

Big Ten Tennis is just getting back in action as players and teams try to earn their place in the next ranking.

The Illini women have had a mixed start to the new season.  First there were four singles and three doubles titles at the Florida Gulf Coast Hilton Garden Inn Invitational.  The 25th ranked Illinois team then hosted No. 4 Notre Dame, falling 5-2.  During that match Amy Allin and Marisa Lambropoulos took the team’s points with singles victories, with Allin taking out ranked Chrissie McGaffigan.

The Illini men had a tough start. After a good showing at the Illini Open in Sarasota, the team was shutout by the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 7-0. The only set win came from sophomore Stephen Hoh over Jarmere Jenkins in the No. 4 spot.

The Indiana women picked up a victory on their first try as they defeated Western Michigan, 6-1.  After taking the doubles point, the Hoosiers had five straight set victories from Leslie Hureau, Evgeniya Vertesheva, Charlotte Martin and Myriam Sopel.

Most of the Big Ten teams are in action now so I’ll have more extensive roundups in the weeks to come.
