ITA All American Championships: Qualifying rounds tough on Big Ten Players

With Qualifying complete, the Buckeyes send one to the singles main draw of the D’Novo/ITA All American Championships while a Hawkeye woman will play for a spot on Thursday in the Riviera/ITA All American singles draw.

Ohio State had seven men competing in the Qualifying at the All Amercans. Shuhei Uzawa, Balazs Novak, Steven Williams and Nelson Vick all lost their first round matches.  Matt Allare upset seventh-seeded Luka Somen of Virginia Tech, 7-6(5),6-4, in the first round and then Peerakit Siributwong of Oklahoma, 6-4,2-6,7-5, in the second, but lost to Chris Kearney of UC Irvine in the final round. Devin McCarthy also recorded two wins before dropping the last match in three sets to Artem Baradach of SMU, the second seed.  Only Blaz Rola made it all the way through.  The third seed took out Tristan Jackson of Tulsa, Evan King of Michigan (King had beat Andres Carrasco in first round) and then John Collins of Maryland to Qualify.

The tournament wasn’t any better for the rest of the Big Ten players.  Krisztian Krocsko of Purdue defeated Corrado Degl’Incerti Tocci of Virginia Tech, 6-4,0-6,6-1, but then lost to Thacher, 6-4,7-5.  Tobias Wernet of Minnesota fell to Malte Stropp of Mississippi State, 6-1,7-6(5). Jeremy Langer of Indiana was beat by sixth-seeded Nick Meister of UCLA, 5-7,6-1,6-2.

Penn State players failed to qualify at both tournaments Eddie Bourchier fell in first round to Peter Lucassen of USC, 6-3,6-3. Sonja Molnar of Iowa defeated Courtney McLane of Alabama, 6-4,4-6,6-1, before taking out Nittany Lion Petra Januskova, a winner over Olivia Colman of SDSU in the first round. In addition to Evan King, Whitney Taney represented Michigan at All Americans, but lost in the first round of Qualifying to Marta Lesniak of SMU (3), 6-3,6-4.

In doubles play at the D’Novo/ITA All American Men’s Championships, the teams of Aaron Dujovne & Mark Kovacs of Purdue and Isade Juneau & Josh MacTaggart of Indiana lost in the first round. Buckeyes Devin McCarthy & Balazs Novak made it to the Qualifying round before falling to Kyle McMorrow & Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington, 8-4.  Matt Allare & Shuhei Uzawa did make it all the way through for a spot in main draw doubles.

Chelcie Abajian & Breanna Smutko of Illinois won their first match of Qualifying doubles at the Riviera/ITA All American Women’s Championships before losing to Virginia’s Emily Frazier & Hana Tomljanovic. Kelsey Haviland & Cami Hubs of Ohio State lost in round one to Vicky Brook & Lindsay Clark of Yale.

Main draw play begins on Thursday, October 7th for men and women, however rain has delayed women’s play so there is still a round of Qualifying to go for Sonja Molnar.
