At the 2010 Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational, the home team took to the court and produced the most wins, with junior Dennis Nevolo picking up the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award.
Nevolo went 4-0 for the weekend, not even dropping a set during play even though he was up against some tough competition from the University of Alabama, Wake Forest and Notre Dame. In total, the Illini men recorded 14 singles wins and five in doubles, which included a sweep of the matches on the first day.
Rachael White, Breanne Smutko, Chelcie Abajian and Allison Falkin represented the Illini women at the Duke Fab Four. During the event, Illinois shut out Big Ten rival Northwestern, highlighted by Rachael White’s win over Maria Mosolova, the top-seeded player in the draw. Freshman Allison Falkin picked up her first win as an Illini when she beat Wildcat Nida Hamilton, 6-3,6-1. Smutko and Abajian left with the Section A Consolation Doubles title.
Head Coach Michelle Dasso was happy with the results, "This was a positive start to our season and I am very proud of the girls' intensity, competitiveness and drive to continue to learn and improve."
The Illini women head to Las Vegas this weekend for the UNLV Invitational, while the men are going to the Land Rover Napa Valley Classic. Daily stories from that event can be found at Zoo Tennis.
