While some of the Big Ten teams are just getting back to school, others are well into action on the court.
The Indiana women were in action this past weekend, taking full advantage of the home court. They won 19 out of 21 singles and 10 out of 11 doubles matches at the Hoosier Classic against Cincinnati, Kansas State, LSU and Miami of Ohio. Leslie Hureau (Flight 1), Charlotte Martin (Flight 3) and Diana Kyllmann (Flight 5) all captured their draws. (Flight 2 was done in round robin format.)
The Hoosier men were off this last weekend, but had a good start to the season the previous week as Dimitrije Tasic came in second in the top flight at the Duke Fab 4, falling in three sets to Cleveland State’s Yannick Goosens. At the same time, teammates Will Kendall and Stephen Vogl came in third in their respective flights of the Indiana Invitational.
Dennis Nevolo of the Fighting Illini was the final representative of the Big Ten at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic, which welcomed junior tennis players into the mix this year. Nevolo’s 3-0 record in the group play, finishing Sunday with a 6-1,6-0 win over Kentucky’s Maks Gold, put him as one of the final eight in the USTA Wildcard Shoot-out, played in 10 point tiebreaker format. In the first round of that event, the Illini sophomore squeezed past Florida freshman Sekou Bankoura Jr. 12-10 before falling 10-5 to Kentucky’s Eric Quigley.
