USTA Pro Circuit Events See Past and Present Ilini Together

It was the graduate and the newcomer as Illini Ruben Gonzales (class of ’08) and freshman Karunuday (KU) Singh took a trip to Claremont, California, to play the Pomona Valley Hospital USTA Pro Classic.

Singh, who joined the team in January but sat out his first half season, got plenty of practice in for when he’s officially on the roster in January.  The native of India came into the tournament unseeded and made it all the way to the semifinals.   Among his conquests, Singh eliminated second-seeded Dimitar Kutrovsky, a former University of Texas player, and  tour veteran Jeff Tarango.  KU Singh was finally stopped in the semis by Devin Britton, the 2009 NCAA singles champion.

The singles draw ended early for Ruben Gonzales (left), who bowed out in the first round to top junior Marcos Giron, but he and Singh teamed up for a run in the doubles draw.  The duo was seeded four and made it through to the semifinals before losing to eventual champions Taylor Fogelman and Chris Kearney in a tough 7-5,3-6,1-0(10/5) match.

The new week has already started off on a good note for Ruben Gonzales, who is through to the qualifying round at the Costa Mesa Pro Classic, also held in California
