The Gopher teams both had close matches this past weekend, but the end results were very different as the men created an upset and the women were on the losing end of one.
The No. 51 Minnesota men picked up the doubles point over No. 24 Pepperdine to start the match. They fell behind, though, as Michael Sicora and Tobias Wernet dropped their singles matches in straight sets. Dino Bilankov's win at No. 4 would briefly tie things up at 2-2 until Sebastian Gallego put the Gophers in the lead. It all came down to Court 3, where Rok Bonin squeezed by Alex Llompert in a third set tiebreaker to give Minnesota the 4-3 win.
Unranked Long Beach State lost the doubles point, but they had the wins in singles over the No. 51 Gopher women. They would take the first two singles before Alessandra Ferrazzi would pick up a win at No. 1 singles and even the score. There was another brief lead for Minnesota with Magdalena Wiecha's win at No. 6, but Long Beach State came back with straight set wins of the next two matches for their 4-3 win.
The Gopher men and women are back in action on Friday, March 26th.
