Most Big Ten teams fall on Day One of ITA Indoors

February 12, 2010
There's still hope for some Big Ten teams to take home trophies after the finish of day one at the ITA Team Indoor Championships.

At the University of Wisconsin, the ITA Women's Team Indoor Championship had only one surprise in the first round and it wasn't a shocker.  North Carolina, who upset Notre Dame two weeks ago to earn their place in this draw, did it again.  This time it was the Georgia Bulldogs who went down, 5-2.  As for the Big Ten teams, host Wisconsin fell 6-1 to the NCAA champions and top seeds, Duke.  Michigan was also eliminated, 5-2, by seventh seeded Florida.

The Northwestern women are one step closer to repeating.  The No. 2 seeds today  took out Tennessee, 6-1.  It was no easy task as two of the matches went the distance, including the Maria Sorbello win over Wildcat Samantha Murray.  Tomorrow they will face the Florida Gators.

At the men's event at the University of Virginia, there were no upsets.  Top-seeded University of Southern California, last year's NCAA champions, shut out Fresno State as did the Cavalier home team over Alabama.  It was a tight one for the seventh-seeded Georgia Bulldogs (last year's finalists), but they got past Ole Miss, 4-3.

There are only two Big Ten teams in action at that event.  The Tennessee Volunteers beat the Illini for the second time in a week, however, there were some close matches with three going to third sets. The Ohio State Buckeyes, seeded three, did advance after a 4-2 challenge from Louisville.  They will face No. 11 Florida on Saturday.

Teams that were eliminated on day one will get to playoff in consolation matches at both events.  For complete results and live stats, visit the official websites for the men and the women.
