Buckeye women shutout opponents in first four matches

January 25, 2010
The Buckeye women are off to a great start, shutting out teams in their first four matches of the spring season.

On Saturday, the Ohio State women made it four for four when they completed a double-header without losing a match.  The No. 38 team in the country finished a 7-0 win over the University of Missouri on their home courts in Columbia.  The match was clinched by Paloma Escobedo over Kaitlyn Ritchie, 6-2,6-3.  Just a few hours earlier, the Lady Buckeyes had downed Memphis 6-0, a match finished by Kelsey Haviland over Amanda Brown, 6-2,6-3.

Ohio State Coach Chuck Merzbacher's team finished at No. 37 last year and are looking to top that.  They welcomed three freshman for the 2009-10 season, Kara Cecil, Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele, a top junior who was her high school's MVP four straight years.

The spring season for the Ohio State women began on January 19th with a double-header at home.  In the first match against Xavier, freshman Gabby Steele clinching her inagural college match before the Buckeyes went on  to a 7-0 victory.  The second match, against Cleveland State, would finish with the same score, with yet another freshman (Kara Cecil) sealing the victory.

Next up for the Buckeye women will be the ITA Kickoff event at Fresno  State University.  In addition to the Bulldogs, Florida State and Virginia will be competing in that regional.
