Around the Big Ten this week

January 27, 2010
Most of the Big Ten tennis teams were in action this week and there were some tight matches and disappointments along the way.  Here are some of the highlights:

Michigan StateThe Spartan men dropped a 6-1decision to William & Mary on the Tribe's court in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Michigan State's men then returned home to split a double-header, defeating Wright State and falling to Cleveland State. The Spartan women did defeat Cleveland and also beat Detroit, both with 6-1 scores.

Illinoi

The Illini women had a tough weekend as they lost two close ones, but they were both to higher ranked teams.  No. 26 Virginia defeated No. 33 Illinois 4-3, despite senior Megan Fudge commanding singles and doubles. It was the same 4-3 at 11th-ranked Tennessee. (Check the storie on the Illinois men vs. Virginia match)

Iowa

The Hawkeye women fell to No. 6 Notre Dame, with Alexis Dorr recording the sole Iowa win (over Kristen Rafael, 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4)).

Minnesota

The No. 31 Gopher men squeezed by No. 65 Nebraska 4-3 after Sebastian Gallego defeated David Bendheim in three sets. The Minnesota women had a tough one as they were shutout by No. 18 North Carolina.

Michigan

The Wolverine men were just one better than Vanderbilt in a tight contest.  Even the doubles was close, decided by a 9-8 win from Michigan's Jason Jung & Evan King.  It was Chris Madden who finished it with his third set win over Vanderbilt's Charlie Jones.
