Big Ten women's teams bow out of NCAAs

It was a short trip to the NCAA Championship final rounds for the Big Ten women's teams.  Northwestern and Michigan -- both top ten seeds -- were upset on the first day.

The sixth-seeded Wildcats were up first thing in the morning against the No. 11 University of Miami women.  Though Samantha Murray and Kate Turvy took the first doubles match, the Hurricanes came back for the next two and put the first point on the board.  Miami made it 2-0 when Anna Bartenstein took out Lauren Lui, followed by another straight set win by Laura Vallverdu.  Turvy did pick up a point for the Big Ten champion Wildcats at No. 4, but Bianca Eickhorn clinched it for the Hurricanes.

The Big Ten didn't have any better a showing in the afternoon.  The fourth-seeded Michigan women were shutout by No. 13 Tennessee.  The Volunteers took a tight doubles point and followed it with three straight set singles wins.  The Wolverines had captured sets on the remaining courts, but they just didn't get the job done quick enough.
