Players from Big Ten Tennis Head to National Indoors

Ten players from four schools will represent the Big Ten Conference at the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The six men and four women will compete this week for a chance at the title of this second leg in the college tennis national championships.

Ohio State has the biggest roster with Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola  playing singles and the team of Matt Allare & Peter Kobelt competing in doubles.  Dennis Nevolo of Illinois will play singles as will Michigan’s Evan King and Denise Muresan (right), who is seeded fourth in the women’s singles draw.  Northwestern will be sending the doubles team of Linda Abu Mushrefova &  Nida Hamilton.

For the first time, the National Intercollegiate Indoors are being held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open Championships.  Singles draws for men and women consist of 32 players each and the doubles draws will have 16 teams. Winners of the ITA Regional Championships received automatic entry.  The rest of the draw is made up of eight finalists from the ITA All American Championships, the Super Bowl champion from the ITA Small College Championships, wildcards given to the host school (in this case, Columbia University), the USTA and the ITA.  Seven At-large entries are also given based on ranking.

Play begins on Thursday, November 4th and will conclude with finals on Sunday, November 7th.  Daily results from the USTA/ITA National Indoors are available at the Intercollegiate Tennis Website. Look for stories and photos at Zoo Tennis.
