Before the weekend officially began on Saturday morning, some Big Ten teams had already started play with some wild Friday matches.
It was a battle for two of the nation's top women's teams as No. 5 Northwestern headed to Waco, Texas, to face the new No. 1 -- Baylor. After splitting doubles, the Bears took the point with Lenka Broosova & Csillia Borsanyi's victory over Linda Abu Mushrefova & Maria Mosolova. The Wildcats soon evened it up with Lauren Lui's win at No. 3, but Karolina Filipiak and Borysanyi got the lead to 3-1 Baylor and Jelena Stanivuk sealed it with a win over Stacey Lee. The Wildcats did, however, take the next two matches so the final score was 4-3 Baylor.
The 4-3 match between the No. 34 Indiana and No. 60 Minnesota women was a bit tighter. The Gophers took the doubles point, but then only picked up one point in singles before Lindsey Stuckey clinched it with a 7-5,6-4 victory over Doron Muravnik. Jackie Sperling would then squeeze out a tiebreaker to bring Minnesota up to 3.
There doesn't seem to be anything unusual these days about the Ohio State men shutting out their opponents, but they did it twice on Friday -- 7-0 over Michigan State followed by 5-0 over Toledo. The Buckeyes don't seem to be leaving their No. 2 ranking, just a few weeks from the Big Ten Conference Championships at Indiana.
