Fall Season Over For Big Ten Men

The fall tennis season is over for Big Ten players and here’s a look at how the men finished it up:

Illinois-Dennis Nevolo finished the season with a good showing at the USTA/ITA National Indoors while his teammates were at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships, with Bruno Abdelnour winning his flight’s consolation.  Before they headed home for the holidays, the Illini  hosted the Challenger, with most of the team is participating and former Illini Amer Delic and Ryler DeHeart making the finals of singles and doubles respectively.

Indiana-The Hoosiers were also at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships, where four players – Josh MacTaggart, Santiago Gruter, Travis Neilson and Stephen Vogel reached the semifinals of their brackets.  The Indiana men will be on the court on December 3rd when they are home to a USTA Campus Showdown.

Iowa-The Hawkeye men finished their fall at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.  Their best showing there was by Chase Tomlins, who finished 3-2 for the final day.

Michigan-The Big Ten Indoors was also the final stand for the Wolverines and they left their mark.  The freshman team of Barrett Franks and Justin Rossi won the Flight A doubles title and Shaun Bernstein, another freshman, finished the weekend with a 4-2 record.

Michigan State-The Spartans season finished in the fourth round of the Big Ten Indoors for freshman Denis Bogatov, who made it further than anyone else on his team.  It was a fairly quiet fall season for Michigan State, with only two other invitationals and the ITA Regionals.

Minnesota-The Gophers concluded their fall schedule at the Metlife Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Tampa, Florida.  At the tournament, Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn won the doubles title.

Northwestern-The Big Ten Indoors was the last tournament on the schedule for the Wildcats.  Their last players in the draw – Joshua Graves (above), Andrew McCarthy and Spencer Wolf – fell in the round of 16.

Ohio State-Buckeye Freshman Blaz Rola had an impressive first season that ended with a semifinal loss to Steve Johnson of Southern California in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoors.

Penn State-The Nittany Lions made it to the final day of the Big Ten Indoors, earning four wins in the backdraw by Bryan Weinetz and Jason Lee as they closed out the fall season.

Purdue-The Boilmakers didn’t stay long at the Big Ten Indoors, as Jan-Frans Engelbrecht was eliminated in the first round and Billy Heuer took ill.  It was the end of a quiet season for the Purdue men.

-After a great finish to the 09-10 season, which included an NCAA appearance for the first time ever, the Badgers had a rough start into the fall of 2010. They had quick exits at the Big Ten Indoors.
