Newbies take Big Ten Player of the Week Awards

April 23, 2010
There are two new names this week on the Big Ten's Player of the Week award list and they are both deserving of the honor.  Minnesota's Sebastian Gallego and Purdue's Michelle Sammons both received the first recognition of their college tennis careers.

Sebastian Gallego, a junior from Columbia, defeated two nationally-ranked opponents last weekend. The three-set wins over 22nd-ranked Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin and 82nd-ranked Joshua Graves of Northwestern.  The Gophers picked up the win at Northwestern.

Purdue's
Michelle Sammons is  senior, originally from South Africa.  This past weekend she won all her matches for her last home play.  On Saturday, she was the lone winner in the Michigan match, taking out 20th ranked Denise Muresan. She followed it up on Sunday by winning both her matches -- including the clincher -- as the Boilmakers defeated Michigan State.
