Mixed results for Big Ten teams during ITA Kickoff

February 2, 2010
The 2010 ITA Division I Kick-off event finished up Monday with mixed results for Big Ten teams who were after a spot at the ITA National Indoors. The championships will take place February 12th-14th,with the men at the University of Virginia and the women at the University of Wisconsin.

On the men's side, the Georgia Bulldogs, finalists at last year’s ITA Men's Team Indoors, took out Northwestern 4-1 on their way to another shot at the trophy. The Ohio State Buckeyes broke a record with their 93 consecutive win at home as they blanked Tulsa to win their regional. It was unseasonably cold in Waco, Texas, as Baylor shutout the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Bears then took the spot in that regional.

It was Georgia Tech over Penn State 4-2 in the first round of the Florida event. The No. 31 Minnesota Gophers lost their opening round Kickoff match to No. 16 Wake Forest, 4-2.  At that same event, Michigan was taken out by No. 14 Kentucky. After eliminating Columbia in the opening round, Indiana lost to the No. 10 Ole Miss. The Illini men lost only one singles match all weekend and will be playing at Virginia (read about their matches here).

There were some tough matches for the Big Ten women. The 38th ranked Ohio State women upset No. 15 Fresno State to advance at the Bulldogs own court before falling to Florida State. The Illini women lost their bid for an Indoors ticket to No. 20 Ole Mississippi in a 4-2 decision. The Wolverines squeezed by Arkansas (4-3) for a place at the championship. Northwestern took out Old Dominion (6-1) and Princeton (4-0) to dominate their home regional (The rest of the Big Ten women did not participate in Kickoff weekend.)
