Interesting notes in Big Ten weekend start

April 25, 2010
We're just one weekend away from the Big Ten Conference Championships. Teams across the region are getting in their final dual matches. So far, there haven't really been any surprises.

The Indiana women defeated Michigan State Saturday (5-2), keeping quite a record in check.  For Hoosier coach Lin Loring, it marked a 33 year winning streak over the Spartans.

The Michigan women, currently ranked No. 4 in the country, secured their No. 1 position for the Big Ten Champs and kept their perfect conference record with a 5-2 win over Illinois.  With that result and Northwestern's shutout of Penn State, the standings will now put the Wildcats at No. 2 in the Illini at No. 3.

It was a record-making ninth shutout of the season for the Buckeye women, who took out Wisconsin.  The Ohio State men captured their 20th straight victory (6-1 over Northwesternand -- if they get by the Badgers on Sunday, will take their fifth consecutive Big Ten title and the tournament's No. 1 seed.  With Illinois win over Michigan, the standings have them in second and the Wolverines in third. Position of the remaining teams on the men's side is too close to call, with a pivotal Sunday matchup of Minnesota and Iowa.
